REDLANDS – The term disaster recovery implies trouble and a way out of it. It might be a suitable way to sum up the varsity volleyball match – aka the battle for 1st place in the Christian League - at Arrowhead Christian on Tuesday night from the Lancers point of view. It was clear from the onset of the match that the Eagle gunslingers were in their best form, racking up 11 kills in the 1st set. They may have had more had the Lancers given them a chance. Instead 12 of the points awarded to Arrowhead were the result of Lancer errors. By contrast, the Eagles only handed the Lancers 3 points off of errors in the 1st set.
Trailing 0-3, the Lancers made their first point on a diving service reception by Junior Libero Brittany Lamon-Parades and a subsequent kill by Junior Setter/Outside Hitter Taylor Pierini. The Lancers trailed by 7 at 3-10 when the first time out was called and then by 11 at 7-18 at the 2nd time out. Trailing 8-23 the Lancers put together their longest scoring streak - 3 – during the set, with a net violation against the Eagles, a service ace by Sophomore Outside Hitter Lyndsey Carruthers and another Pierini kill. But an Eagle kill and block sealed the set in their favor at 25-11.
The Lancers had not been limited to 11 points in any other set this league season. Nor have they held an opponent to so few points. The set was a perfect storm of opponent efficiency and Lancer errors. The Lancers effort was not completely without merit. They did earn 8 of their 11 points on their own without any help from the Eagles. Fortunately, this concludes the “disaster” portion of our report. Let’s explore “recovery.”
The first 8 points of the 2nd set were scored, unfortunately for the Lancers, in the same order as in the 1st set, seeing Western fall behind 0-3, and then 2-6. The first 2 points showed Lancer improvement and determination as there were many volleys before the points were decided by Eagle attacks. Aided by kills by Junior Setter/Opposite Hitter Alexa Cordero, Senior Middle Blocker Jessica Arguelles and Lyndsey Carruthers, the Lancers caught the Eagles at 10-10 and hope was restored, via the mini-come back, that the Lancers could compete with Arrowhead. After falling behind again, the Lancers tied the match at 15-15 and then took their first lead at 17-16 on a kill by Senior Setter/Opposite Hitter Chelsea Cramer.
Arrowhead recaptured the lead with consecutive kills but an Alexa Cordero attack tied it at 18-18. Consecutive Lancer errors resulted in a time out. After the break, the Lancers were only able to win 2 more points on hits by Chelsea Cramer and Senior Opposite Hitter Kelsey Doolittle before losing the 2nd set 20-25.
The 3rd set started out the same as the other 2 with the Eagles taking a 3-0 lead. The set appeared to be heading for disaster when Arrowhead had tallied a 16-6 lead, but then, temporarily at least, the howling winds changed direction in a big way.
It started with a Pierini kill, then a Carruthers ace, followed by an Arguelles attack and another Lyndsey ace. 4 offensive points won. The Eagles mishandled balls on the next 2 points and then Pierini leapt for point on a block. 7 points in a row for the Lancers. The streak was interrupted by an Eagle kill but resumed again with an Arrowhead service error, a kill by Alexa, a hitting error and a lift violation. The Lancers, once behind by 10 points, had caught the Eagles at 17-17. On a night of extremes the Lancers had had their most successful string of scoring of the season by winning 10 of 11 points during the run. The string was a total team effort, with the back row playing excellent defense and the setters taking care of their hitters. The team had restored the fight in the Fighting Lancers.
Unfortunately, the Eagles caught fire with 4 kills to close out the set mixed in with 4 Lancer errors. The Eagles ended Western’s hopes for a 1st place tie by taking the 3rd set 25-20.

The JV Lancers were victorious against the JV Eagles, 25-20, 27-25, holding on to their first place tie with Ontario Christian. The Lancers season finale at OC may very well be a single match for the league championship as none of either school’s remaining opponents currently have a winning record in league. Make plans now to be there by 5pm next Thursday to support the JV team and celebrate their outstanding accomplishment. Congratulations to their players and coaches on a excellent season!

Thursday, October 29 in San Bernardino - JV 5:00pm, Varsity 6:00pm
When Western hosted Aquinas on October 13, the visiting Falcons were the only undefeated team in the Christian League – not just league play but non-league as well. Their 9-0 record became 9-1 after their visit to Upland. The Lancers dominated the first 2 sets 25-14 and 25-13. In the 3rd set, the Falcons took a narrow victory at 25-23. The Lancers started the 4th set in a 1-7 hole but caught fire and soon led 19-13 before taking the set, and match, 25-21. The Lancer victory ended a 4-match losing streak against the Falcons. Over the last 10 matches Western has won 5 and Aquinas has won 5.
Aquinas had been ranked #10 in CIF division 4AA until losses to Western and Ontario Christian knocked them out of their ranking.

The stakes for the game are 2nd place in the Christian League although there is an unknown factor due to the results of the Aquinas/Pomona Catholic match being unavailable today from the league coordinator or the various web sites which scores are posted on. Assuming 4-2 Aquinas defeated 2-4 Pomona Catholic (we know that is not always a given!) then Aquinas currently has sole possession of 2nd place. If Western defeats Aquinas and Ontario Christian is victorious in their home match against PC then there will be a 3-way tie for 2nd place in league with 2 matches to go. The long term stakes for Ontario, Western and Aquinas is that 2 of 3 of them will earn a playoff berth. The 3 teams all still have matches to play against the other 2. Aquinas would seem to have the toughest challenge having also still 1 match against Arrowhead.
There are 8 leagues in Division 4AA. In 2008, 7 of the 8 sent 3 teams to the playoffs, including the Christian League. 4 of the 8 leagues have fewer than 6 teams.
Due to a scheduling quirk, Arrowhead Christian has already played an extra league game than the other 3 contenders. They are playing Monday (Loma Linda), Tuesday (Western) and Wednesday (Pomona Catholic) of this week. ACA is 7-1 with two games left and with a victory tonight (Wed) they will clinch at least a tie for 1st place. A victory in their remaining match against Aquinas, the only league team to have beaten them, next week will ensure sole possession of 1st place. In 2008, Arrowhead was 1st place in the Christian League with a 10-0 record. In the playoffs, they received a 1st round bye, defeated Buckley in the 2nd round and lost to Laguna Blanca in the quarterfinals.
The Lancers have not been eliminated from a chance to tie for 1st place but that would require them to win their final 3 matches and Arrowhead to lose against Pomona Catholic and Aquinas.
If history is any indicator the Lancers are in good shape! The last time they lost to Arrowhead Christian, they rebounded with a wonderful 4-game winning streak including wins at Webb, former school of Brittany Lamon-Parades, at home for their 1st ever on campus home victory against undefeated Aquinas, at Loma Linda Academy and at home against Ontario Christian when the varsity Lancers put the skids on a 6-match losing streak against OC. Projecting this into the next 4 matches means wins against Aquinas, Loma Linda, OC and a victory in the 1st round of the CIF playoffs!
Aquinas High School is located at 2772 Sterling Avenue in San Bernardino. Take the 210 East to Del Rosa Avenue. Turn left on Del Rosa and then the 1st right on Date Street. The school is at the northeast intersection of Date and Sterling.

· # 8 Arrowhead Christian at Pomona Catholic (Wed, Oct 28)
TRIBUTE TO THE BACK ROW
The players on the back row are a crucial part of the Lancers success this season. All year long they have been attacked, whacked at, hit at, spiked at, and generally spoiled the plans of Western opponents by diving, digging, bending, stretching and turning possible defeat into a chance to score. We salute those players, especially those whose roll is limited to back row play – Libero Brittany Lamon-Parades, and Defensive Specialists Stephanie Yeung and Vicky Rorex. We appreciate your efforts. You are a major reason the Lancers are enjoying a winning season. Keep on diggin’!

LADY LANCER PROFILE
Becca Lewis
Our coaches are special people to our Lady Lancers and we want to get to know them better as well. We all know that Becca (Rebecca) Lewis, assistant coach of the Varsity Lady Lancers, has championship blood in her as a member of the 2004 CIF Championship team. This week the Lancer Volleyball Blog (LVB) interviewed Becca and got to know some other interesting things about her.
LVB: Hi Becca, thanks for being with us today (editor’s note: sounds really authentic, doesn’t it?). Tell us a little about yourself, where you were born, where you went to school.
BL: I was born right here in Upland. I graduated from Western in 2005 and then went to Point Loma Nazarene University (in San Diego) and graduated with a degree in liberal studies (elementary education) with a concentration in Human Development.
LVB: We know you were a part of the volleyball program at Western. Were there any other sports you played?
BL: Yes, soccer. That was my main sport growing up and the sport I played for four years in college!
LVB: Really?! Well, what was your favorite volleyball memory?
BL: Lady Lancer Dance before our matches! Ha! No, it would have to be taking the C.I.F. title... Or maybe when I scored a point off of a header? Bahaha
LVB: Excuse my ignorance but, a point off of a header?
BL: Well, when I was just a scared little freshie I was new to this whole volleyball thing. I was a dedicated one sport woman. Soccer was the name of my game. In one of our first few matches a girl spiked a ball and it came soaring at my head. Instead of throwing my hands up with an appropriate volleyball reaction, I did what came natural to me; I simply headed the ball back across the net (or as I was used to into the other goal), surprising the other team so much that they let the ball drop. Kill for Becca in the record booksJ.
LVB: Way to use your head! And tell us more about this Lady Lancer Dance.
BL: Before every match our team had a certain routine that we became rather superstitious about. We had to do our 'Little Lady.' You know, "Little Lady Lancer walking down the street, she didn't know what to do so she stopped in front of me"... and so on; and when she stopped in front of you, you had to break it down with the best and most creative dance you could think of. It was hilarious and surprisingly enough got us going for the game!
LVB: Who were your Western volleyball coaches?
BL: Dawn Bartholomew, Adam Bartholomew, Rachel Pentz and Brian (I forgot his last name!)
LVB: Where do you attend church?
BL: At Christ Lutheran Church in Chino.
LVB: What were your favorite subjects in school?
BL: My favorites were math and human development. My least favorite was history.
LVB: Tell us about other things you are involved in… where you work and hobbies and other interests.
BL: Well, the obvious one, I coach Volleyball at Western. I also coach a U-12 boys soccer team out of LaVerne and referee volleyball. I am going to be coaching soccer at Diamond Ranch High School in the Winter. Eventually will get my credential to teach elementary school! Hobbies? Time with friends, traveling (even though that is not as much of a possibility as I would like!), any sort of sport, and I enjoy the arts... painting, drawing etc.
LVB: What would you say is good about Western, now or when you were there?
BL: I enjoyed the size of Western. It was small enough to not feel overwhelmed and allowed you to have a wide base of friends and a solid support group of peers and elders. And, it wasn't so small that the school couldn't be competitive in sports and academics.
LVB: Tell us about your parents and family.
BL: My parents, Ted and Debbie have been married 33 years (beating the statistics everyday!) and they are a blessing. My Dad is a construction superintendent turned cross-country trucker thanks to the recent economy, and my mom is a homemaker. I have one brother, Casey, who is five years my senior and he has a daughter, Emma, who was a year old this last July!
LVB: Congrats, Aunt Becca. Now tell us the question we all want to know about. Any love interest?
BL: I am in love with a military man, Kyle, who is currently stationed in Pensacola, Florida where he will start flight school soon! We have been dating two years now, and yes... I miss him.
LVB: Pets?
BL: I have a dog, Pepper, and a cat, silly little cat; both who are crazy but wonderful little animals.
LVB: We really appreciate the time you have spent with our girls. We know you really care about this program and we are blessed to have someone of your quality both athletically and spiritually to be a role model for them.
BL: I am priviledged to work with your girls and look forward to their smiles every day. I love my Lord and thank Him for this crazy life!
LVB: Thank you Becca for being with us. Let’s go win at Aquinas!
