LANCERS HIT THE ROAD TO DOWNEY

On Tuesday, at Club West, the Varsity Lady Lancers defeated the visiting Academy for Academic Excellence in 3 sets, 25-7, 25-3 & 25-9.  The final point of each game was won on an offensive attack by the Lancers; the first being a kill by sophomore Lyndsey Carruthers; the second, an ace served up by Junior Jasmine Lara; and the third a kill by Junior Alexa Cordero that was blocked out of bounds.  The final 8 points of the first set were won on serves by junior Brittany Lamon-Parades who continued the streak into the first 22 points of set 2.  Brittany’s incredible serving streak, albeit aided by the fine defensive and offensive play of her teammates, included 8 aces.  In all, Britt served it up 30 consecutive times without a single service error.  Great job Brittany!

The JV Lancers also won their match, 2-0.

TRIVIA QUESTION:  Describe, in detail, the hand slapping and clapping drill the Lady Lancers perform before each game.
TRIVIA ANSWER:  You’re in luck today because you thought you could never figure this one out.  Last Saturday at the Arcadia tournament the author went undercover and took video of the inner circle and after 137 views in slow motion was able to discern all the moves.  Here they are:
1.       7 hand slaps to the floor
2.       7 claps
3.       5 hand slaps to the floor
4.       5 Claps
5.       3 hand slaps
6.       3 Claps
7.       2 hand slaps and 2 claps; repeat once
8.       1 hand slap followed by 1 clap; repeat twice
9.       Yell “WIN!”
There.   That’s like learning the Colonel’s Secret Recipe!   We have de-mystified the Lancers most coveted intellectual property.  Please sign a non-disclosure agreement if you intend to memorize this drill and to ensure you don’t share it with OC.  And, it’s not like we’re going to see parents in the stands slapping and clapping in unison any time soon.  No, before you get to that point you need to attend this Saturday’s 4 hour seminar on… How to Properly Complete the “Ace” Cheer…  Tell ya what, let’s go 6 hours on that.

Tomorrow (Friday) at 5:00pm (per the schedule), in Downey, the Lady Lancers will compete in their last match prior to the start of league play, against Calvary Chapel Downey, although there will still be one non-league match to play, at Webb on Friday, October 9.  The Lancers have already played two teams in Calvary Chapel Downey’s league – the Alpha League – this year in tournament play.  They were Paraclete at Pasadena Poly and Whittier Christian at Arcadia.  The Calvary Downey Grizzlys tied for last place in league play last year going 1-9 (3-12 overall).  This year, according to their website, they have played matches against Pacific Hills (twice), Village Christian, Norwalk, Vasquez and Lucerne Valley.  Results of these matches were not available.

Their website is loaded with scripture references and the one chosen for the volleyball page has to put a smile on your face:  “Blessed be the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, And my fingers for battle-“  Psalm 144:1

Calvary Chapel Downey, established in 1979, is located at 12808 Woodruff Avenue in Downey.  Take the 605 South to Imperial Hwy.  West on Imperial to Woodruff.  Left on Woodruff.  School should be on the left (East) side of the street.  The author takes no responsibility if the school is not actually there!

LADY LANCER PROFILE

Today, we focus our attention on that unstoppable server and renowned Libero Brittany Lamon-Parades.

Brittany, a junior, attended middle school at Carden Arbor View and attended high school at The Webb Schools before transferring to Western this year.  She has played volleyball for 6 years including city league and Club volleyball.  In addition to volleyball, Brittany also participates in sea cadets and paleontology.  Her father, Marcus Paredes is a financial advisor and mother Michelle Lamon-Paredes is a stay at home mom.  Brittany was born in San Bernardino.  Her favorite subject is history and her least favorite in math.  After high school she plans to go to the Naval Academy or school on the East coast and then become either a diplomat or Navy surface warfare specialist in logistics (WOW!).  The author believes these interests are what makes her a formidable presence on the Lancer back row.  When asked, “What’s good about Western?” Britt says “Western has and is helping me pursue my goals.”  Oh yeah, she also says she loves dinosaurs and Navy boys!  We’re glad you joined us Brittany!
