A TALE OF TWO TOURNAMENTS

The Varsity Lady Lancers have spent the last two Saturdays playing a lot of volleyball – 15 sets in all. Two Saturdays ago at Pasadena Poly they faced stiff competition from the private school sector and last Saturday at Arcadia confronted public school teams from higher divisions.

The day at Pasadena Poly was spent getting experience against tough competition from Flintridge Prep (Div 3A) and then facing two schools from the Lancers’ own division – 4AA – St. Margarets and Paraclete. The Lancers lost the first six sets against these schools as follows:‘

• Flintridge – 22-25, 17-25
• St Margarets – 13-25, 17-25
• Paraclete – 15-25, 22-25

However, the day ended positively as the Lancers thoroughly defeated the school from the highest division they played all day – Div 1A Ramona Convent – by a score of 25-6.

In tournament number two at Arcadia this last Saturday, the Lancers faced 3 out of 4 teams from upper divisions and lost matches only to teams that were league champions last year. Opponents and scoring as follows:

• Arcadia – Div 2AA Pacific League defending champions – Lost 16-25, 20-25
• Hemet – Div 2A – Won 19-25, 25-22, 15-11
• South Pasadena – Div 2A – Won 25-21, 25-21

After claiming victory in 2 out of the 3 pool play matches the Lancers lost in the first round of the playoffs to defending Div 4AA Alpha League champs Whittier Christian in a single set 14-25.

Coach Mrs. B was pleased with the development she saw in the Lancers play at the two tournaments noting that the girls showed much stronger resistance to the temptation to let down against tough competition which resulted in the victories experienced at Arcadia on Saturday.

Up Next – On Tuesday at 6pm, once again at Club West, the Lancers will host Academy for Academic Excellence, a K-12 public charter school from Apple Valley with an enrollment of just under 1,000 students. AAE competes in Div 5A’s Agape League, posting a record last season of 4 wins, 6 losses in league and going 4-12 overall. No information was available regarding the volleyball team’s record so far this season.

LADY LANCER PROFILE

With each pregame press release we will profile one of the Lady Lancers – in alphabetic order by first name. Today’s Lancer is Alexa Cordero. Hopefully, you will be able to view the attached pictures.

Junior Alexa Cordero is an outside/opposite hitter and setter. She was born in Glendora and has played volleyball for 5 years, including 4 years of club ball. She also played softball from the ages of 5-12 in the Covina Hills Girls softball league , including 1 year of travel ball. Prior to Western, she graduated from Sonrise Christian School. Alexa’s favorite subject is anatomy; her least favorite is history. After graduating from Western she plans to attend college. She’s not sure which one yet but considers UCI, Pepperdine and USC to be front runners. Alexa’s dad Alex is a sales engineer in the electronics field – not to mention our team photographer – and mom Michele is a mortgage banker for Bank of America and can be found on tournament days between matches trying to read a good novel but is often sidetracked by all the good conversation going on around her. When asked “What’s good about Western?” Alexa says “the people and all my friends”.

Go get ‘em Alexa!

Special thanks to the Cordero Family for the customized water bottles for our Lady Lancers to enjoy this season!
