AND THEN THERE WAS ONE‏

UPLAND – The home varsity volleyball match against Loma Linda Academy on Tuesday night can be summed up rather succinctly.

1st set – 3-3 tie, 10-0 run by WC, 12-5 run to finish it; 25-8

2nd set – 2-2 tie, 11-0 run by WC, 12-4 run to finish it; 25-6

3rd set – 2-2 tie, then 3-3, then 7-7, then 9-9, then a 16-5 run by WC to finish it; 25-14

Any questions?

There were 103 services in the match. The previous low number of serves was 120 at Loma Linda on October 15. The most number of serves was 188 in the 4 set loss against Pomona Catholic on October 22.

The JV Lancers had their way as well – at least in the 1st set - winning 25-15. The 2nd set required extra points but a powerful attack by Sophomore Middle Blocker Hannah Rhinehart gave Western the match point opportunity which was won on a subsequent Roadrunner attack that flew into the net.

We do appreciate the LLA teams for traveling to Upland. They maintained a positive attitude during the matches and never gave up.

Will the next match be more intriguing to write about? Oh….. I think so. But, more on that later.

The varsity victory clinched at least 3rd place in the Christian League… or perhaps a bit more accurately the #3 team from the Christian league in the upcoming division 4AA playoff bracket that will be announced precisely at 12:45pm on Sunday, according to Mrs. B. But the potential for #2 is just one victory away.

There was more drama off the court than on the court on Tuesday night. Senior night had arrived. Believe me, knowing that the volleyball cycle will not start up again is not the favorite thing of senior players and families. Making it better was knowing that this was not our last match, nor our 2nd to last match, maybe not even our last home match and not our last get together off the court.

But the most poignant moment of the night came after the game, after the Lancers had their post game chat, when the players, in unison, showed their support to one of our own family members, Lyndsey’s mom, Sabrina, who is recovering from surgery. They presented her with a super-sized hand-made card. They reminded everyone and themselves that there are more important things going on around us than a volleyball match and that teamwork can be much more significant than bump-set-spike.

Thursday, November 5, 2009 in Ontario – JV 5:00pm, Varsity 6:00pm

For the JV Lancers (7-2), this match is for the league championship. The JV Knights (8-1) have already clinched at least a tie for 1st place. Thursday’s match will determine if these 2 squads will be co-champions. If that turns out to be the case, Western can revel in the fact that they defeated their co-champs twice. On October 20 the JV Lancers won 14-25, 25-21, 15-8.

While the Varsity Lancers were holding firm on their piece of 2nd place in league by beating Loma Linda on Tuesday, Ontario Christian and Aquinas were battling for the other piece. The winner would remain tied with Western for 2nd. OC won, setting up a thrilling season finale for both teams when WC and OC meet on the court on Thursday.

The Knights rolled into San Bernardino to play Aquinas just a few days after the Lancers left town. How did the 2 matches compare? Very closely. Both dub-C and OC won at Aquinas is 3-0 sweeps but all the sets were very close. The Lancers won each of theirs by 2 points. The Knights won 25-20, 25-22, 25-23.

Like Thursday’s contest, the last time Western and OC met they had identical league records at 3-1. Western won in a 3-0 sweep and for 48 hours enjoyed being in first place – alongside Arrowhead Christian – in the Christian League.

That first match was in Upland. This one is at Ontario Christian. Last year’s JV team won there but varsity lost in 4 sets. Varsity has not won at Ontario since 2005, also the year of their last playoff appearance.

The two teams are now so comparable on paper that the intangibles have to be tallied…

1. Home court advantage for OC? No, the line measurements are the same in Upland. So what if the lines are blue in one place and green in the other.

2. Number of fans in attendance? Like, which Western fan is not going to be there for this one?

3. Noise factor? Are you kidding? We have Jose and Olga!

4. Travel distance? Gimme a break. It’s like 5 miles.

5. Loose and relaxed? Sure, no distraction due to it being Senior Night for the Lancers.

6. The better team? Well, last time that was decided on Oct 20 the dub-C came out on top.

Ontario Christian has won 6 of the last 11 matches against Western, including 6 in a row before the October 20 loss in Upland. The Lancers have not played a 5 set match since the 2008 season finale against OC.

There will be at least 6 participants from Western’s 2004 CIF championship team in attendance on Thursday: Varsity Head coach Dawn Bartholomew, Varsity Assistant Coach Becca Lewis, Varsity Assistant Alex Arguelles, JV Head Coach Missy Perlman, JV Assistant Coach Heidi Holmes and…… Ontario Christian Varsity Head Coach Paige Molina.

LADY LANCER PROFILE

Dawn Bartholomew

Dawn Bartholomew is in her 13th year of coaching volleyball at Western Christian High School. The Lancer Volleyball Blog recently interviewed her.

LVB: So, 13 years of coaching at Western. Were they all as varsity head coach?

DB: Yes

LVB: And were you coaching before you came to Western?

DB: Yes, I’ve been coaching for 19 years overall. Before Western I was at Sierra Vista High School in Baldwin Park for 6 years.

LVB: What did you find different about coaching in public school vs. Western?

DB: The parental support is completely different, at least from what I experienced. I tell the girls frequently how fortunate they are to have the complete support of their parents at our matches. In public school, I once hosted a volleyball banquet when I had 45 players in the program. They were only 48 at the banquet. The parents just didn’t show up.

LVB: Let’s dig deeper into your history. Where we you born?

DB: Phoenix, Oregon. I’m a graduate of Phoenix High School. Go Pirates!

LVB: Oh yeah, you’re a Oregon Ducks fan too right?

DB: Yeah. I had to let loose some quacks to all the Trojan fans on campus after that big victory on Saturday. I don’t get to do that very often you know…. well, lately I have!

LVB: Where did you go to college and how did you meet Adam?

DB: We were both students at Azusa Pacific University. We worked together on campus and were eventually married at Foothill Christian Church in Glendora, where we still worship.

LVB: So, tell us more about your kids who we see all the time at matches.

DB: Well, Jenna Priscilla (named after my mom) is 10 ?; attends Crossroads Christian School; loves volleyball, basketball, softball, reading and any competitive board game. Bryan Aaron (named after my cousin Bryan, a Marine, who was killed in action in Afghanistan; and his uncle Aaron, Adam’s twin brother); is 6 years old; attends Western Christian in Claremont; loves Thomas the train, trains, Lightning McQueen, cars, and competitive board games.

LVB: Are there other sports you have coached?

DB: Yes, freshman and JV girls basketball at Western and Sierra Vista.

LVB: Do you have a favorite volleyball coaching memory?

DB: Sure. Several. First, a playoff game vs. Pasadena Poly in 1998 -we played them the toughest any opponent did in the rest of the playoffs. Then, in 2001 that we made it out of the 2nd round of the playoffs for the 1st time by beating Oaks Christian. Winning the Ayala Tournament in 2004 was a huge moment for our program. Another great memory was to look up in the stands at our CIF semi-final game at Sage Hill in 2004 to see 12 former players cheering us on. Of course, winning the CIF championship in 2004 speaks for itself. The night before that was very special too. These are treasured memories for me---but pretty much any team event off the court and any time a former player comes to a game or contacts me is a favorite coaching moment for me as well.

(Editor’s note: more to come on the 2004 championship season in a future article!)

LVB: OK, here’s a couple questions we’ve asked all the other Lady Lancers. What was your favorite and least favorite subject in school?

DB: Least favorite - World History (sorry Oden!) and Philosophy - who cares if a tree makes a sound in the forest if no one is there???? Favorite- US History, and any Political Science class.

LVB: OK, and what’s good about Western?

DB: The students, athletes, parents and good friends have always been the best part of Western. I have been blessed to have them as my 2nd family all these years.

LVB: One last question… What’s this about your dad, Bud, being the #1 Lancer fan?

DB: My dad has been coming to support Western Christian athletics since 1997. He has driven down from Oregon during almost every volleyball, basketball and softball season since then. He is an incredibly supportive and generous father. Adam and I have been very blessed to have him support us and our teams all these years. When our teams win, he is SOOO excited. And when we lose—he runs a play-by-play through of every mistake in the match. I’m pretty sure he takes the losses even harder than I do! J

LVB: Thanks Mrs. B. Our daughters have been blessed to have had you as their coach. We appreciate all the time you and Becca have dedicated to them since practice began in May, the summer league season, not knowing when our gym was going to be ready for practice, through the tournaments and now as we wrap up the league season which won’t be the end of the road for the first time in awhile.

DB: Thank you. I greatly appreciate all the players and their families. My experiences with you have truly been a blessing.

LVB: Then the feeling is mutual. Thanks for sharing with us. Let’s go get a victory against OC!

7:00pm Friday, November 6, 2009 at the Galen Center in Los Angeles

Featuring the Lancer Volleyball Program in attendance!

Thanks to Jose Arguelles for making this event happen for the 3rd year in a row!

The last time these 2 teams met the Bruins swept the Trojans. The Bruins are having a better season than the Women of Troy. The Trojans started the season nicely with a record of 11 wins and 1 loss with 10 of the 11 wins being 3-0 sweeps. Since then in tough PAC 10 conference play their record is 4-7. The Bruins went 10-3 in non-conference play. Their conference record is 8-3 and they are 1 game behind Washington for 1st place. After the match on Friday night, both USC and UCLA have 6 conference matches remaining.
