HOME SWEET HOME‏

UPLAND - One can only imagine the scene at the Bartholomew household when the Division 4AA playoff bracket was published at 12:45pm on Sunday afternoon. Mrs. B is looking at her computer screen and gets her first glance of the selected opponent for the Lancers in the 1st round. She rubs her eyes, rechecks what she is looking at and mutters “huh?!” under her breath. Without letting her eyes leave the screen she slightly turns her head and shouts across the house, “Honey. Do you guys have a volleyball team?” The tone of the question is as if she was asking, What are you not telling me?

The Lancers 1st round opponent was Crossroads. Adam Bartholomew left Western last year to become Athletic Director of brand new Crossroads Christian School in Corona. Could it be he was secretly amassing a volleyball army right under Mrs. B’s nose? Would the headline of the next Lancer Volleyball Blog article read BETRAYED!

Of course, it turns out it was the other Crossroads – the one in Santa Monica – and not Adam’s young program after all. They have no varsity high school volleyball team yet, by the way, just a Freshman team. And, Mrs. B was not sitting at her house in Upland when the brackets were announced. She and Adam had travelled to CIF headquarters in Cerritos to pick up the bracket, take care of administrative matters, talk to old coaching friends and generally to enjoy the way it was done in the old days before the internet. (C’mon B’s, you’re not THAT old!).

The victory over Ontario Christian on Thursday had delivered what was expected – a home game for the Lancers 1st playoff game in 4 years…. And the 1st HOME playoff game in 5 years. In 2005, the year after the CIF Championship (much more about that in the Lady Lancer Profile below), the Lancers traveled to Woodcrest Christian in Riverside and lost in the 1st round.

Studious Lancer fans (you’re one if you’re still reading) celebrated over having a team that went 4-6 in league play then immediately did a double take when seeing who the 6 loses had come against… #1 Whittier Christian, #3 Windward and #6 Paraclete. The only league loses the Lancers could “brag” about was to #10 Arrowhead Christian. Crossroads might not be the easy match the Lancers thought they had earned. Sorry Lancers, these are the Crossroads Roadrunners, not the Loma Linda Roadrunners.

It was clear from the outset that a CIF playoff game is a little different from a regular season match. What’s with the people at the corners wearing those neat white polo shirts? Where’s our cute little JV girls? And suddenly there is an American flag in the gym. Looks who’s singing the national anthem… the referee know to about 85% of Southern California as “Paul”. Nice job, Paul. And lookee there, the Lady Lancers are holding bouquets of flowers on the court. Is it Parent’s Ni --- oh, they’re for the other teamL. Nice execution of a CIF host team tradition!

And then it was time to find out just how good the Crossroads Roadrunners were. At the outset it looked scary. They didn’t commit an error until the 16th point scored. Fortunately, the Lancers had 5 early kills and a block that kept them in it when that 1st Roadrunners error occurred to make it 6-7. There were 9 ties early in the 1st set until the score was 14-14. Then, 3 Lancer errors contributed to a 4-0 run by Crossroads forcing a Lancer time out at 14-18.

That one could win Time Out of the Year honors because the Lancers returned to the court to take the next 7 points. The run was served by Senior Jessica Arguelles and included 2 aces without a service error. Sophomore Lyndsey Carruthers attacked from the back row and that led to a Roadrunner ball handling error. Senior Chelsea Cramer tipped the ball over the net for a kill. Senior Kelsey Doolittle made the best of an errant serve by punching the ball and somehow sending it sideways over the net for a kill. First set, Lancers, 25-20.

During the 2nd set one had the feeling the Loma Linda Roadrunners – no disrespect intended - were in the building as the Lancers cruised easily 25-12. The Lancer offense and defense earned 15 points, while giving away only 8 during the set. The Lancer R&D department pulled out one of its top secrets during the set – a Lyndsey Carruthers jump serve! Who knew?! Junior Taylor Pierini and Kelsey Doolittle chased one ball down that was heading for the space between the scorer’s table and the Lancer bench. Kelsey knocked it up long enough for Mrs. B to hand Taylor a protractor so she could compute the angle needed to thread the ball back between the antennas. Without even looking Taylor launched the ball backwards over her head and the point was kept alive as it descended in Roadrunner territory inches from the net.

The worm started to turn during the 3rd set as Crossroads won 5 in a row to take a 13-7 lead. Another timely Western time out seemed to jinx the Roadrunners who committed 5 consecutive errors to get the Lancers as close as 11-13. The Lancers trailed by 2 at 15-17 when an attack that was clearly outside the eastern line was ruled in by the line judge. The crowd reacted but showed restraint by cooling down quickly. Perhaps as a ‘thank you’ the line judge started laughing, apparently acknowledging she was not perfect. Uh, next time could you just correct your call? The Lancers lost the last 5 points of the set to end it at 18-25.

Two Lancer errors started off the 4th set but kills by Jessica Arguelles and Junior Alexa Cordero put the Lancers ahead 4-2. The Roadrunners called a time out at 6-2 but they were never able to lead again as the Lancers maintained a fairly comfortable 4 point lead through the set. Junior Brittany Lamon-Parades made so many diving service receptions and digs it appeared her knee pads might wear out. At one point, before the final point, Lancer students started holding up a pinky. Why? A tribute to Chelsea Cramer’s regimen of spinning the ball on her pinky before each serve. She is so nonchalant about it one wonders if she is even aware she is doing it. The match ended after a Jessica Arguelles block and a Crossroads attack error gave the final set to the Lancers, 25-17.

Thursday, November 12 – 7:00pm at Upland

By virtue of their 3-0 sweep of visiting Jurupa Valley (Mira Loma), the Sage Hill Lightning (Newport Coast) are the next opponents of the Lady Lancers. A coin flip at the CIF office this morning determined that the match would be played in Upland, dashing the hopes of the Lancer Moms who thought the Lancer Dads were going to get rooms at The Resort at Pelican Hill. That’s a $600 savings dads so treat the whole family to ice cream after the match.

The Lancers are 14-5 on the year – 15-5 if you count the coin flip!

Sage Hill competes in the Academy League of Division 4AA and hold an 8-2 League Record, 10-6 overall. They are the #4 ranked team out of the 43 in the division. Their only league losses were to #2 St. Margaret’s.

ACADEMY LEAGUE

St Margaret’s 10-0 21-2

Sage Hill 8-2 10-6

Brethren Christian 6-4 10-8

Oxford Academy 4-6 7-11

Whitney 2-8 4-11

Crean Lutheran South 0-10 1-15

The Lightning started their season with a trip to Kauai to compete in the Kauai Challenge. Although they hold an admirable league record, one more win than the Lancers, they did not do well in tournament and non-league play losing 10 of 13 contests, according to results on the Max Preps web site.

Western last met Sage Hill in the semi finals of the 2004 CIF playoffs. The match was held in Newport Coast and the Lancers won in 3 sets. This year the Lightning and Lancers share only one common opponent – Calvary Murrieta. The Lancers lost that match in 4 sets, 25-18, 23-25, 18-25, 19-25 at Club West on September 15. Sage Hill played them at home on September 30 and won in 3 straight.

The Lady Lancers are making the Lancer Volleyball Blog and its BOLD predictions look good this year…

October 4 – when the Lancers were 5-2 in non-league play, just before league action began…

An opportunity certainly before the Lancers this year is to continue the upward trend after going 2-8 in league play in 2007 and 3-7 in 2008 and, of course, they have the talent to progress well beyond that goal.

October 14 – after the first home win against Aquinas and a 2-1 league record…

The fans are free to look ahead and ponder what may be unfolding before our eyes. As league play began, I was just hoping we could continue the upward trend from the previous two years – 2-8 in 2007, 3-7 in 2008 – and get 4 wins. Now, it is very possible that goal can be checked off the bucket list at the halfway point. You’ll notice that smile on your face continuing to broaden with each game – that’s because there will be more W’s. Next Tuesday, you’ll be sitting in Lancerland (this author’s nomination for a name for the Lancer gym) and say, Did that just happen? Did I just see that? Did we just beat OC? Who ARE those girls?!

Then, you’ll start asking, So, how many teams do they let in to the playoffs from each league? Fact: There were 3 from the Christian League in 2008. Hmmmm….ok. Then, comes the road trip to Redlands to face Arrowhead for the 2nd time. Could that be a de facto league championship game? At this time, 4 teams control their own destiny for the league championship – Arrowhead, Western, OC and Aquinas – although all but Arrowhead can only guarantee a share of the league title. Things will shake out as Aquinas and OC hook up tomorrow night and the Lancers and OC on Tuesday night. A week from Tuesday in Redlands will be big. It might be very big.

No matter what happens at Arrowhead, we’ll play 3 more games after that, 2 of them on the road. At some point, you’ll say, you know, it really doesn’t matter if they let 2 teams in from our league or 3. And, one of these Mondays when the coaches poll top 10 is released you’ll celebrate and say well-look-who’s-there. Then will come the league finale in Ontario. I won’t spoil the outcome of that game for you but let’s just say it won’t be our last match. Hang on and enjoy the ride!

On October 28, after the loss to Pomona Catholic and the 2nd loss to Arrowhead Christian…

If history is any indicator the Lancers are in good shape! The last time they lost to Arrowhead Christian, they rebounded with a wonderful 4-game winning streak including wins at Webb, former school of Brittany Lamon-Parades, at home for their 1st ever on campus home victory against undefeated Aquinas, at Loma Linda Academy and at home against Ontario Christian when the varsity Lancers put the skids on a 6-match losing streak against OC. Projecting this into the next 4 matches means wins against Aquinas, Loma Linda, OC and a victory in the 1st round of the CIF playoffs!

Predictions for the Sage Hill match? Well, the LVB computers are analyzing the possibilities as we speak. We should have the results available by about 9pm Thursday night. Aw, heck, the Lancers are going to win, of course. Why? Because they believe they are! That’s good enough for me.

TRIBUTE TO THE 7TH GIRL!

All year long the 12th man… 6th man… 10th man… just call it the 7th girl… has been there rooting on the Lady Lancers on whether at home or on the road. The feeling is especially warm in the Lancer gym and the Lancers have been fortunate enough to enjoy their 1st 2 playoff games. What a tremendous home we have! Thanks for your support!!!

LADY LANCER PROFILE

2004

In 2004, the Varsity Lady Lancer volleyball team had their greatest season ever going 10-0 in Christian League play. All matches but one were 3-0 sweeps, and their overall record was 30-1 after winning the CIF playoff. The Lancers swept their way through the playoffs as well defeating Lucerne Valley, Calvary Murrieta, Sage Hill and St. Margarets all 3-0. The Lancer Volleyball Blog recently asked our varsity coaches about their experiences that year including Dawn Bartholomew, head coach and Becca Lewis, Assistant Coach in 2009 and Senior Middle Blocker in 2004.

LVB: Dawn, Becca, the 2004 squad must have been just awesome. You played a total of 78 sets that year, or maybe they were still called games back then, and you won 71 of them. How did the team get to be that good?

DB: That team worked incredibly hard. They practiced every day like they were preparing for battle. We had lost to Brentwood in the CIF semi-finals the year before--we probably should have won, but we lost our edge in that match and couldn't close the deal. We had developed an intense rivalry with Brentwood, and our loss to them in 2003 motivated us the entire 2004 season. That team was never satisfied, and they always expected more from themselves.

BL: I don't think we ever thought anything of it all until it was over. That was the beauty of our team and our season. Each game we expected a win, we didn't question our ability. It was like we didn't notice what the other team was doing; our sole focus was what were we going to do next. I think our team was so dominant and successful because we understood the error that lies within the sport of volleyball. We knew that the next point would come, and they seemed to just keep coming.

LVB: What were your expectations before the season started? Did you see this coming?

DB: We would have been satisfied with nothing less than a CIF Championship in 2004. We knew we had the talent and ability. One of our sayings that year was "Can we do it? Will we do it?" The pressure was on us to fulfill what we were capable of.

BL: We had some true competitors on our team, and we wanted to win! We knew that an opportunity for a great season was in our hands, but I don't think any of us expected all that we accomplished.

LVB: Dawn, tell us about your assistant coach that year.

DB: Adam was my assistant coach. Rachel Pentz Renninger coached the JV team and helped us whenever she could, and Brian Nies was a floating assistant for both JV and Varsity. I have always been blessed to have great assistant coaches. Adam and I really enjoyed coaching the team together during that time especially. He has an incredible eye and mind for the game, and we would not have been as successful without his coaching expertise.

LVB: It looks like the Ayala Tournament was the biggest tournament you played in that year. You went 11-2 in sets that day.

DB: Winning the Ayala Tournament was a huge moment for our program. We competed against top ranked CIF teams from Divisions 1-3 and beat them all. The entire tournament, people were questioning the legitimacy of our ability to participate with those teams. At the end of the night, after an 8-0 record that day, the tournament director presented us with the championship trophy and remarked “Who said little teams can’t play big?!” That was an incredible feat by that team.

BL: Dawn said it perfectly. Every other team was questioning why we were at the tournament and waiting to watch us get sent home... But that didn't quite happen. J The tournament was really like the season; one game at a time; one point at a time and after each win we waited for who was next. The last point was incredible, it was a thrill similar to winning the CIF title.

LVB: What are some memories you have of the CIF playoffs?

BL: Sage Hill sticks out in my mind. It was the semi final game and I think it was one of the biggest crowds we played in front of. It was electric! I also always go back to memories of playing Calvary Chapel Murrieta. They came into Royal Oak with banners, a crowd and a we will beat you kind of attitude. We had never really experienced someone coming into our gym with that sort of way about them and we didn't like it. Every kill we made, every ace we got was celebrated just a little more that night... as I said before, we were all real competitors. And it is funny, I don't remember much about the actual final game, except for the final point and all the hugs after!

DB: One of my favorite memories was looking up in the stands at our semi-final game at Sage Hill to see 12 former players cheering us on.

LVB: What was it like the night before you won the CIF championship?

DB: The 2004 season was long. Our state games were played AFTER Thanksgiving. The girls and the coaching staff were tired. Everyone was gunning for us. The night before the CIF Championship game, Heidi Holmes was sick with a fever, and Lauren and Paige got into an accident on the way to the team sleep over. One of the younger players had been acting really selfish, and I had to discipline her. It wasn’t an easy day. However, once the girls got to the Chapman’s house for the sleep-over, things settled into place. A team joke that year had involved little green army men—and the girls were hiding them all over the house. I had to tell them it was a bad idea to hide plastic army men in the oven. J When I left the house that night, they were all huddled around the table, decorating their team water bottles, and they were completely content. It was a good feeling—I knew right then that we were going to win the next day.

BL: Oh, the green army men! They were all over Brit's house. I remember that night being fun. Smiles, laughter and goofy high school girl jokes is all I see when I think about the night before the final game.

LVB: And, how about the match with St. Margaret’s to win CIF?

DB: We started the 2004 season playing St. Margaret's, and we beat them in 5 without one of our starters. The victory over them in 3 to win the CIF Championship was a perfect bookend - the Alpha and Omega.

LVB: Has Western Christian won CIF Championships in other sports?

DB: Yes…

· In 1996, the softball team won a CIF Championship in Division 6. (Dave Smith head coach, Adam Bartholomew varsity assistant)

· In 1997, the girls basketball team won a CIF Championship in Division 5AA. (Adam was head coach, Dave Shively was varsity assistant)

· In 2006, girls soccer won a CIF Championship in Division 5. (Jose Ramirez was head coach, Carl Swift was varsity assistant)

LVB: What were some of the memorable or farthest places you went to play in the CIF playoffs and State playoffs?

DB: For girls basketball, the farthest we traveled was to play Mission Prep in San Luis Obispo. For volleyball, the farthest team we played in 2004 was Sage Hill. In 2000, we traveled up to Santa Barbara to play Cate Prep School. In 2002 we went to Oaks Christian.

LVB: The 2009 Lancers will have a chance to advance beyond the 2nd round tomorrow night. Western Christian hasn’t had too many volleyball squads get into the quarter finals. When did the first happen?

DB: In 2002. We beat Oaks Christian to advance to the quarter finals. We defeated them in 5 sets at Oaks Christian. The girls were so happy to finally be able to advance past the 2nd round after 3 straight years we had lost in that round.

LVB: We know the CIF playoff format is a 32-team bracket, actually fewer than 32 teams because some get a 1st round bye. How big was the State bracket and is it designed to take champions from all over California, North to South?

DB: The state bracket is much smaller. They only take 1 or 2 teams from each section, and they combine divisions. For example, in state, there is only division 4, not 4A and 4AA. The state office takes teams from each section, and they are seeded per region, ranked numbers 1 through 8. There is a southern region and a northern region, so overall, to win state, you would need to win a total of 4 games past the CIF championship.

LVB: The 2004 run finally came to an end on November 27, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, when you lost to Marymount in 5 sets. It must have been a disappointing loss because you won the 1st 2 games 25-22 and 25-23 but then lost the next 3 - 16-25, 24-26 and 12-15. How did you feel after that match? Becca?

BL: There wasn't a feeling of disappointment, but more a 'Darn' kind of feeling in your stomach. We had believed in each other so much that nothing was impossible to us. We were ready to play together forever. We didn't just lose the game... we all looked at each other and said no, not yet... realizing we wouldn't see each other every day and get to be the family we had become. And, I remember being EXHAUSTED!

DB: Marymount....augh! Still to this day, we will all groan, sigh, mutter under our breath and want to kick something whenever anyone mentions that game. The first 2 games were amazing. Then, Marymount found their rhythm in game 3, and we battled in game 4 and 5, but just could not hold them off. They were ranked 39th in the nation and had a long string of CIF and State Championships, and we had our 1 chance to beat them--and we let it slip through our fingers. The agony of defeat......

LVB: What does it say about that team that 6 of the players on that roster, and I’m including Kass, Alex and Paige, have come back to participate in coaching volleyball at Western?

DB: What a blessing it has been to have Paige, Missy, Kass, Heidi, Alex and Becca come back to help and coach. They are an amazing group of young ladies, and I am honored and blessed that they would even consider giving of their time and themselves to the team and the program. I am humbled that the Lord has blessed me so greatly with such wonderful young ladies to know, coach and work with. Whatever successes our teams are able to achieve can be directly credited to their efforts.

BL: We enjoy each other. We all share a moment in our lives that is precious and we would not have had the chance to experience that moment without each other. Even though we may differ on coaching styles or techniques or whatever, I think we all are eager to recreate the family that was created on that team. That is why I don't think you find hesitation in the former players of our team in aiding the program at Western.

LVB: We are so fortunate you all feel that way. Thanks for taking us down memory lane. I think it is important to continue to tell the story of 2004 so that it is not forgotten, especially since there are so many that participated still in our midst. The players, parents, fans and the entire Western family are truly fortunate to have you all with us still! And, as great as 2004 was, thanks for your part in making 2009 better than many of us ever expected.

DB: Yes, 2004 was a great season and team. The school and community rallied behind us the whole way, and that made the season and accomplishment even more special. However, what these young ladies have done this year is just as special in their own right. We are incredibly proud of them. We are so happy that they get to experience the CIF playoffs for themselves, and we hope they continue to enjoy every opportunity they have to play volleyball together.

BL: Success isn't something that just happens - success is learned, success is practiced and then it is shared. -- Sparky Anderson

LVB: OK, let’s go make it 2 in a row against Sage Hill!
